Save the Baram Forest from logging

Save the Baram Forest from logging

In the Malaysian state of Sarawak, one of Southeast Asia's last remaining primary rainforests is being ruthlessly cleared.

The deforestation takes place in the protected Suling Sela'an Forest, a designated biodiversity hotspot. Particularly alarming is that part of the deforestation is taking place in the core zone of the proposed Baram Peace Park area – in the middle of one of the region’s last intact primary rainforests.

Despite international environmental regulations, tropical timber worth over USD 2 million is logged every month. The Penan indigenous communities are affected and are fighting to preserve their forest – with blockades, petitions, and even a lawsuit in court. So far, their voices have been ignored.

The company responsible is Borneoland Timber Resources. The logging license was granted by the Sarawak government behind closed doors – without an environmental impact assessment and without consulting the surrounding indigenous communities.

The lack of transparency and the systematic disregard for the voices of those affected must end now. The Bruno Manser Fonds supports the Penan in every step of their resistance against illegal logging.

We demand an immediate halt to logging in the Baram rainforest. We demand that the logging license in question is revoked. In addition, the logging road should be taken away from the timber companies and declared a public road.
